RRI.CO.ID, Mataram - After nearly 16 years with no major updates, the West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) State Museum has officially begun a revitalization program this August. A fresh IDR 3 billion (USD 187,000) state budget injection will fund a crucial overhaul of the permanent exhibition space, which has not been comprehensively updated since 2010.
“The revitalization begins in August and will take four months,” said NTB Museum Head, Ahmad Nuralam, in Mataram on Monday, 13 July 2026.
The NTB Museum is among several recipients of the Ministry of Culture’s supplementary 2026 budget for revitalization, alongside the NTB Cultural Park, Istana Dalam Loka, and several heritage sites on Sumbawa Island.
Nuralam said the IDR 3 billion revitalization grant is significant because the museum’s last update was the provision of display cabinets in 2010.
The museum will remain open during the revitalization. Collections normally shown in the permanent gallery will be temporarily moved to a provisional exhibition space so museum activities can continue.
“We moved the permanent exhibition to a temporary gallery so the public can still view the artifacts we hold while the revitalization proceeds,” said Nuralam, as quoted by Antara.
He added that the project creates opportunities to improve supportive facilities. Upgrades such as collection reorganization and a new lighting system are expected to enhance visitors’ experiences when learning about NTB’s history and culture.
The revitalization will address not only the physical exhibition space but also the presentation concept, including the development of stronger storylines and storytelling.
The NTB Museum plans to introduce new thematic sections covering the pre-Islamic era, the Hindu-Buddhist period, the spread of Islam, and ethnography. The museum will also display traditional technologies and the history of international trade that illustrate NTB communities’ connections with regions across the world.
Nuralam hopes the revitalization will be completed in time for the NTB Province anniversary on 17 December 2026, so the public can immediately enjoy the museum’s renewed appearance. ***
