RRI.CO.ID, Banyuwangi - Indonesian Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka, inspected the newly revitalized Banyuwangi Wholesale Market (Pasar Induk Banyuwangi) in Banyuwangi Regency, East Java, on Friday, July 10, 2026. According to the Vice Presidential Secretariat, Gibran emphasized that traditional markets should be managed professionally while continuing to drive local economic activity and preserve the historical character of their surroundings.

"The visit reflects the government's commitment to ensuring that market revitalization goes beyond physical r,enovation. It is intended to serve as a catalyst for more professional, transparent, and accountable management while promoting more equitable regional development, in line with President Prabowo Subianto's directive," the Secretariat said.

The Banyuwangi Wholesale Market revitalization project was carried out from October 8, 2024, to December 31, 2025. The program aims to stimulate regional economic growth, improve the organization of commercial activities, and develop the surrounding heritage district as an urban tourism attraction.

During the visit, head of the East Java Strategic Infrastructure Implementation Unit, I Gusti Agung Ariwibawa, told the vice president that the project was designed to expand the market's capacity and improve its trading facilities. At the same time, the redevelopment preserved elements of the original structure considered historically significant to the people of Banyuwangi.

"The market has been redeveloped into a two-story building with capacity for approximately 798 kiosks and market stalls," Ariwibawa said.

"The front façade, which bears the 'Pasar Banyuwangi' (Banyuwangi Market) sign, is part of a structure believed to be a cultural heritage building, so we preserved it in its original form," he continued.

Ariwibawa said the market's design also incorporates distinctive elements of Banyuwangi's local architecture. This allows its economic function to coexist with the preservation of the region's cultural identity.

"The design incorporates local architectural features that are characteristic of Banyuwangi, including the use of batu kerukul stone ornaments," he said.

Responding to the presentation, Gibran praised the Ministry of Public Works for not only redeveloping the market but also preserving and strengthening its heritage features as part of the city's identity. He stressed the importance of managing traditional markets in a more professional, transparent, and accountable manner without diminishing their role as inclusive community marketplaces.

During the visit, the Vice President also met with traders who are scheduled to begin occupying their kiosks in August 2026. He encouraged them to make the most of the new market facilities.

"You'll be moving in next month. I hope the market becomes even busier and brings the greatest possible benefits to all of you," Gibran said.
