RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - In an innovative bid to tackle island waste management, the Kepulauan Seribu Regency Administration in Jakarta has introduced a circular economy pilot project on Untung Jawa Island, transforming organic household waste directly into nutritious livestock feed.

The initiative utilizes newly constructed duck coops to process organic waste at its source, addressing the unique logistical challenges of island waste management while simultaneously bolstering local food security.

"This is a breakthrough realized by the Kepulauan Seribu Regency to support the implementation of Gubernatorial Instruction No. 5/2026 on the Movement for Waste Sorting and Processing at Source," Kepulauan Seribu Regent Muhammad Fadjar Churniawan said in Jakarta on Tuesday, July 7, 2026, as quoted by Antara.

Fadjar noted that converting organic waste into feed is a highly practical method to significantly reduce the volume of trash sent to landfills. Beyond municipal cleanliness, the project is already yielding tangible economic benefits for the island's residents.

"The results are quite good; in fact, within two days, the ducks have begun productively laying eggs, thereby helping support food security," Fadjar added.

However, the regent emphasized that sustainable waste management requires a collective community effort. He also reminded caretakers to blend the processed organic waste with standard supplemental feed to ensure the long-term health and high productivity of the livestock.

To guarantee the project's technical success, the Kepulauan Seribu Food Security, Maritime, and Agriculture (KPKP) Agency is providing ongoing assistance to local farmers. Fadjar assured that this model is being closely monitored for future expansion.

“If successful, this model can serve as an example to be implemented on other islands," Fadjar said.

Concurrently, Head of Kepulauan Seribu Environment Agency Achmad Hariadi praised the duck farming program on Untung Jawa Island as a concrete manifestation of source-based waste sorting policies.

“We hope this innovation can motivate all areas in the Kepulauan Seribu to develop sustainable waste management systems while accelerating the achievement of targets under Gubernatorial Instruction No. 5/2026 on the Movement for Waste Sorting and Processing at Source," Achmad expressed. ***
