RRI.CO.ID, Jayapura - The Papua Provincial Administration has proposed a strategic blueprint dubbed the Papua Pacific Gateway to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, aimed at repositioning Indonesia’s easternmost region as a primary diplomatic bridge to the Melanesian and broader Pacific island nations.
The initiative seeks to leverage soft diplomacy, specifically through international sports, indigenous cultural exchanges, and cross-border tourism, to reshape global perceptions of Papua while strengthening Jakarta's geopolitical footprint in the Pacific.
"On Tuesday, June 30, we met with Foreign Minister Sugiono at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Office, where he presented a concept that positions Papua as a gateway for Indonesia's relations with Melanesian and Pacific countries," Papua Governor Matius D. Fakhiri announced from Jayapura on Thursday, July 2, 2026, as quoted by Antara.
Governor Matius emphasized that cultural and athletic cooperation offers an incredibly effective, non-political framework for building authentic, people-to-people connections. By hosting athletes, international travel influencers, and high-level cultural delegations from neighboring Pacific states, Papua intends to offer global stakeholders firsthand exposure to the region's infrastructure development and creative economy.
"We also discussed how sports activities can be a bridge, while culture and tourism can be the most effective approach to building a positive view of Papua," Matius explained.
To ensure the strategy translates into synchronized action, the Papuan administration has requested the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to serve as the chief inter-agency coordinator, aligning various state ministries, immigration bureaus, and regional law enforcement bodies under a unified operational umbrella.
The provincial administration is targeting an aggressive timeline, with initial programs slated to kick off as early as August 2026. Among the immediate projects pitch-mapped to the Ministry is an invitation to several Pacific nations to participate in an international youth football tournament, the U-18 Independence Cup, scheduled to be held in Jayapura.
"Through the Papua Pacific Gateway strategy, we are also encouraging the strengthening of the Melanesian cultural corridor, the development of the tourism sector, increasing international connectivity through Sentani Airport and Frans Kaisiepo Airport in Biak, and cross-border cooperation with Papua New Guinea to make Papua the face of Indonesia in the Pacific region," Matius concluded.
By scaling up international flight capacities at Sentani Airport in Jayapura and Frans Kaisiepo Airport in Biak, alongside expanding trade and security cooperation along the shared land border with Papua New Guinea, the province hopes to successfully serve as the proactive, modern face of Indonesia within the Pacific hemisphere. ***
