RRI.CO.ID, Kupang - Seen as a representation of unique local character and wisdom not found elsewhere, the Alor kenari (canary nuts) is being promoted as a new economic driver for East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) through its recently obtained Geographical Indication (GI) Certificate.

This legal protection is expected to become a shared momentum for the administration, farmers, and businesses to safeguard the product’s quality and reputation, thereby improving community welfare sustainably.

“With the registration of Alor kenari as a Geographical Indication, we hope all parties will work together to maintain the quality, characteristics, and reputation of this product so it remains strongly competitive in the market,” said Senior Legal Analyst at the NTT Ministry of Law and Human Rights, Dientje Elensia Bule Logo, in a statement in Kupang, NTT, on Wednesday, 24 June 2026.

She stressed that a Geographical Indication is not only legal protection for a regional flagship product but also a strategic instrument for increasing economic value. Furthermore, it serves to strengthen regional identity and deliver sustainable benefits to the community.

At the event she presented material on Geographical Indications covering basic concepts, the benefits of legal protection, and the role of GIs in increasing added value and competitiveness of regional flagship products.

“This material is expected to raise participants’ understanding of the importance of protecting communal intellectual property as an instrument for regional economic development,” she said, as quoted by Antara.

In a subsequent talkshow, speakers discussed strategies for developing and sustaining the Alor kenari commodity. These plans include strengthening the Geographical Indication Protection Community Institution (MPIG), improving product quality, expanding market access, and fostering stakeholder synergy to preserve the GI’s reputation and sustainability.

At the same event, NTT Deputy Governor, Johni Asadoma, emphasized the need to reinforce MPIG institutions and enhance the capacity of farmers and businesses. He also highlighted the importance of optimizing the commercialization of GI products through stronger marketing and wider market access.

He said obtaining the Alor kenari GI Certificate proves the product has distinct characteristics, quality, and reputation closely tied to its place of origin, and therefore must be preserved and developed to raise community welfare.

“The acquisition of the Alor kenari Geographical Indication Certificate must be a moment to increase the added value of local products and broaden market access. The NTT Provincial Administration supports strengthening MPIG institutions, enhancing farmer capacity, and collaboration among all parties so that Alor kenari can develop into a leading commodity that provides sustainable economic benefits to the community,” he said.

The event was organized by World Vision Indonesia (WVI) through the INCLUSION Program to support the development of the kenari commodity in Alor Regency. It also aimed to increase public understanding of the importance of Geographical Indication protection. ***
