  • Mount Anak Krakatau is showing elevated volcanic activity, with continuous seismic tremors and gas emissions recorded by monitoring stations.
  • Authorities have maintained Alert Level II status and prohibited all activities within a two-kilometer radius of the crater.

RRI.CO.ID, South Lampung - Seismic and visual monitoring stations have detected a notable spike in volcanic activity at Mount Anak Krakatau in the waters of the Sunda Strait, prompting geological authorities to issue urgent vigilance warnings to coastal communities across South Lampung Regency, Lampung Province.

The heightened activity profile of the sea-based volcano has been verified through a combination of visual observations and persistent seismic tremors captured by specialized monitoring arrays. Volcanologists have put round-the-clock telemetry protocols in place to map out the volcano's internal magma movements and mitigate risks for the strategic maritime corridor separating Sumatra and Java.

Head of the Mount Anak Krakatau Observation Post in Hargopancuran, Rajabasa Subdistrict, Bandar Lampung City, Lampung Province, Suwarno, confirmed on Wednesday, June 24, 2026, that the data shows continuous volcanic energy release.

"Currently, Anak Krakatau Volcano is still showing quite high volcanic activity, so the public is advised to remain alert and not approach areas that have been designated as danger zones," he said, as quoted by Antara.

The ongoing volcanic unrest is characterized by persistent internal volcanic earthquakes and continuous gas vents, flashing on real-time seismographs. This steady stream of data serves as the baseline for emergency mitigation plans designed to safeguard nearby maritime traffic and coastal settlement. Because the island volcano is located in an open seafloor landscape, the risk of sudden ballistic material ejections directly threatens small vessels, commercial fishermen, and recreational travelers utilizing the strait.

Despite the uptick in sub-surface pressure, volcanologists have maintained the volcano’s official alert status at Level II (Caution). However, the zone immediately surrounding the volcanic island has been declared strictly off-limits.

"Anak Krakatau Volcano is still at Level II status, or Caution, fishermen and tourists are asked not to approach within a two-kilometer radius of the crater of Mount Anak Krakatau," he said.

In tandem with the physical exclusion zone, local authorities have urged traditional fishermen operating across the Sunda Strait to cross-reference official volcanic bulletins with regional marine weather forecasts before deploying their boats.

Suwarno explicitly warned the public against sharing unverified rumors or sensationalized social media claims regarding the volcano, emphasizing that residents must exclusively rely on official updates broadcasted by the Center for Volcanology and Geological Mitigation (PVMBG) to maintain public safety and prevent unnecessary panic along the coast. ***
