Palu Evaluates Damage After 6.7-Magnitude Earthquake

RRI.CO.ID, Palu - Authorities in Palu, Central Sulawesi, are moving from immediate rescue to systematic damage assessment after a 6.7-magnitude earthquake struck on 16 June. The Palu Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) reported that the disaster left at least 118 pieces of infrastructure damaged across the city.
“Our data release is still provisional, our rapid response team continues field data collection and assessments to update the figures,” said BPBD Palu Secretary, Mohamad Issa Sunusi, in Palu on Tuesday, 23 June 2026.
Issa detailed that the preliminary tally includes 80 damaged houses, with 40 located in Tondo Village, Mantikulore Subdistrict, and 22 in Petobo Village, South Palu Subdistrict. “Damaged houses are spread across 11 villages in six subdistricts,” he said, as quoted by Antara.
Public infrastructure also sustained damage, with 12 facilities affected, including bridges, mosques and churches, along with 10 office buildings, two educational facilities, and six business units.
“Of the six businesses, four are hotels. The two school facilities are infrastructure at Inpres 2 Palu Elementary School and Palu 21 State Junior High School,” added Issa.
During the emergency response phase, the city administration inspected Palu III Bridge, which had been closed after cracking. The bridge has since been reopened to vehicles after an assessment of its fitness.
Officials also assisted with patient evacuations from Anutapura Hospital on the first day of the disaster and coordinated cross-agency technical responses covering medical care and emergency logistics.
“The Spatial Planning Agency has identified structural impacts on affected office buildings, and the Housing and Settlement Agency has assessed damaged homes and permanent housing units,” said Issa.
The provincial administration declared a seven-day emergency response period for several affected areas, including Palu City, Sigi, Parigi Moutong, and Poso. This measure was enacted under Governor’s Decree Number 300.2.1/199/BPBD-6-ST/2026, effective from 17 to 23 June 2026. ***
