RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Jakarta claimed 53rd place in Resonance Consultancy’s World’s Best Cities 2026 list. The Indonesian capital’s ranking was boosted by its strength as a photogenic tourism and entertainment hub, amplified by high social-media visibility and improving transport links.
The Brussels-based firm placed Jakarta ahead of Washington DC, which ranked 57th, and well above Abu Dhabi at 86th. Still, the city trails others such as Guangzhou, Bogota and Kuala Lumpur, while London, New York and Paris occupy the top three positions.
President & CEO of Resonance Consultancy, Chris Fair, told reporters in Jakarta that the ranking reflects the city’s tourism appeal, social-media popularity and enhanced connectivity.
“Yes, the national capital status will move to Nusantara. However, Jakarta’s economic gravity does not move with it,” he said, as quoted by Antara.
Resonance highlighted Jakarta’s “lovability” as a key asset, which is the city placed 28th globally in that category, significantly higher than its overall ranking.
Chris credited revitalized public spaces and visually compelling destinations for boosting the city’s appeal. Key examples include Kota Tua, rooftop venues in SCBD, and the coastal developments around Pantai Indah Kapuk.
The report placed Jakarta among the world’s top 10 cities for Shopping and Family-Friendly Attractions, citing its vibrant festivals, entertainment centers, and family destinations. Additionally, the city excelled in social-media metrics, ranking ninth worldwide for Instagram posts and eighth for TikTok videos.
“Jakarta’s popularity on social media is very high. The city ranks ninth for Instagram posts and eighth for TikTok videos,” said Chris.
Transport improvements also factored into the assessment. Resonance noted the increasing integration of the Greater Jakarta Light Rail Transit (LRT) with other transit modes, the ongoing construction of Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) Jakarta Phase 2, and expanding Soekarno-Hatta Airport rail services.
On the economic front, the consultancy pointed to strong investment flows into the metropolitan area. Developments such as data-center growth along the Bekasi–Cikarang corridor to support cloud computing and AI, and premium office construction in Sudirman–Thamrin, Kuningan and TB Simatupang, were cited as indicators of robust economic activity.
World’s Best Cities 2026 rankings use a Place Power Score that blends objective city performance data with global public perception.
To rank the cities, the methodology evaluates 46 metrics across three main pillars, which are livability, lovability, and prosperity. This data is combined with an Ipsos survey of over 21,000 respondents in 31 countries who shared which cities they view as the best places to visit, live, or build a career. ***
