RRI.CO.ID, Aimas - In a move to turn climate concern into long-term local action, Southwest Papua Province officials and community partners planted 5,000 tree saplings on Monday, June 15, 2026. This initiative is part of the ASRI (Safe, Healthy, Clean, Beautiful) campaign to strengthen climate mitigation and environmental conservation ahead of World Environment Day 2026.
Assistant for Government and Public Welfare of Southwest Papua, Suardi Thamal, said the planting at Jalan Kontainer, Sorong Regency, is an investment in environmental sustainability and future generations.
"Every tree we plant is a symbol of hope and life. These trees will one day produce oxygen, absorb carbon, protect water sources, prevent erosion, and provide benefits to the community," he said, as quoted by Antara.
Suardi added that the ASRI movement forms part of a national drive to boost climate action and raise public awareness about protecting the environment. He urged residents across Southwest Papua to adopt tree planting and care as a sustained cultural practice.
"The success of this activity is not only measured by the number of seedlings planted today, but by how many trees grow and deliver benefits in the future. Let us plant today for a better life in the days to come," he said.
Head of the Southwest Papua Environment Agency, Julian Kelly Kambu, emphasized that environmental stewardship requires broad participation.
"Caring for the Earth is not only the responsibility of the administration or environmental activists, but the responsibility of all of us. If we want to live healthily and enjoy clean air and water, one concrete step we can take is to plant trees," he said.
Julian noted the ASRI campaign brought together military and police units, businesses, universities, schools, environmental groups, civic organizations and the public.
He said cross-sector collaboration is central to preserving the environment and managing climate impacts in Southwest Papua and hoped the movement would strengthen both public awareness and regional resilience to climate change. ***
