RRI.CO.ID, Denpasar - Local stewardship at Tukad Bindu in Denpasar, Bali offers a replicable model for river and environmental management across Indonesia. Environment Minister, Mohammad Jumhur Hidayat, highlighted this during a visit and tree-planting event on Tuesday, 10 June 2026, at Tukad Bindu.

While planting rare species such as sandalwood, agarwood and nutmeg and holding a dialogue with local environmental activists, Minister Jumhur praised Bali’s rich local wisdom as an invaluable resource for conservation. He singled out the work of the Tukad Bindu community as concrete evidence that grassroots practices can sustain river ecosystems over the long term.

"Models like this show that environmental preservation does not depend solely on government policy, but also on active community participation,” said Minister Jumhur, as quoted by Antara.

He argued that Tukad Bindu’s success demonstrates how effective river governance can be achieved through collaboration among government authorities, community groups, and residents.

“I highly appreciate the Tukad Bindu team for building community participation through local wisdom in environmental governance, especially river management. This effort not only preserves the river’s ecological function, but also strengthens the social, cultural, and economic values of the surrounding community,” he added.

The minister urged that the good practices developed at Tukad Bindu be promoted as inspiration for other regions, so that community- and wisdom-based river management can be adopted and replicated nationwide.

"The government encourages the emergence of more similar initiatives so that environmental management in Indonesia becomes stronger, more inclusive, and sustainable for future generations,” he said.

Denpasar Mayor, I Gusti Ngurah Jaya Negara, said the minister’s visit was an honor and a motivator for the city government and stakeholders to redouble conservation efforts.

“The presence of the Environment Minister reflects central government attention and support for the environmental preservation efforts we have carried out with the community,” he said.

The mayor emphasized the need to optimize collaboration among central and local administration, community organizations, and citizens to safeguard ecological continuity and environmental integrity.

He expressed appreciation that the minister received proposals and feedback from Denpasar’s environmental community, noting that such input will inform evaluation and improvements to local environmental governance. With strong synergy, he said, conservation programs can operate more effectively and deliver lasting benefits to the public.

The minister’s engagement at Tukad Bindu, Kesiman Village, highlighted a policy direction that pairs government support with community-led action. This approach utilizes local wisdom as a pragmatic path to preserve Indonesia’s rivers and broader environment. ***
