RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The Communication and Digital Affairs Ministry stressed that undersea telecommunications equipment requires intensive maintenance. Director of Digital Infrastructure Control at the Directorate General of Digital Infrastructure, Indra Maulana, explained that maintaining this equipment is necessary to ensure stable telecom and internet services for the public, especially in disadvantaged, remote, and frontier regions (3T).
One area receiving attention is the Sangihe Islands and Siau Tagulandang Biaro (Sitaro) regency in North Sulawesi. There, officials are carrying out maintenance on the Palapa Ring submarine cable to ensure that public digital services remain uninterrupted.
"All operational maneuvers and use of underwater equipment must be conducted with great precision. We must be cautious to maintain safety," said Indra in an official statement, quoted in Jakarta on Thursday, 4 June 2026.
As a mitigation measure, the ministry, through the Telecommunications and Information Accessibility Agency (BAKTI), has increased bandwidth capacity. The upgrade was implemented at 154 service access points using the Republic of Indonesia Satellite (SATRIA) network.
Indra also said the ministry is cooperating with mobile network operators to guarantee continued access to telecommunications and internet services.
"Ensuring connectivity at public service points and vital facilities in the area remains intact. This effort is aimed at maintaining communication services, government services, education, health, and the economic activities of communities in the border region," he added. (Annaila Azzahra/EN)
