RRI.CO.ID, Madiun - The Indonesia Walk for Peace 2026 followed by 57 Buddhist monks arrived in Madiun Regency, East Java, serving as a living testament to cross-cultural harmony. Local leadership turned the stopover into a rallying cry for unity, highlighting how a physical and spiritual journey can bridge diverse communities.
Local authorities officially welcomed and then saw off the Sangha members from Pendopo Ronggo Djumeno Caruban on Friday, May 22, 2026. Reflecting on the deeper significance of the visit, Madiun Regent Hari Wuryanto emphasized that the pilgrimage extends far beyond a test of physical endurance.
"Your presence is an honor for Madiun Regency and carries a noble message of peace, tolerance, and humanity," said Hari during the gathering, as quoted by Antara.
He noted that the monks' journey offers profound spiritual lessons in simplicity, discipline, perseverance, and universal love. He urged the public, particularly the younger generation, to view the initiative as an inspiration to preserve national unity regardless of background.
To achieve a prosperous society, Hari added that peace must be built collectively. "Even though we have different religions, beliefs, and cultures, we must remain united for the sake of Madiun Regency and a better Indonesia."
The international cohort features a diverse group of religious practitioners bound by a shared humanitarian mission. Bhante Tejapuñño Mahāthera, representing the Indonesian Bhikkhus in the event, explained that the ongoing walk includes 57 Sangha members. Among them, 50 participants traveled from abroad, while seven represented Indonesia.
"We come from various countries, including Indonesia, Thailand, Laos, and Malaysia. The journey begins in Bali and ends in the Borobudur area. This activity carries a message of humanity and peace," shared Bhante Tejapuñño.
The rigorous spiritual trek began in Bali on May 7, 2026, before the group crossed over to Banyuwangi to navigate a route spanning at least 10 regencies and cities across East Java. The monks arrived in Madiun on Thursday, May 21, 2026, taking a brief rest before resuming their walk the following morning.
Covering a total distance of more than 600 kilometers, the pilgrimage is scheduled to reach its final destination at the Borobudur temple complex on May 28, just ahead of the peak Vesak Day celebrations on May 30, 2026.
The send-off was marked by strong institutional backing from the local administration and community leaders. Regent Hari and other officers escorted the monks as they set out.
The collective presence of these officials underscored the region's formal commitment to interfaith solidarity as the monks continue their ritual walk toward Magelang, Central Java. ***
