RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta — Jakarta Governor, Pramono Anung, has revealed plans for the potential expansion of the Jakarta Light Rail Transit (LRT) network to the Pantai Indah Kapuk (PIK) 2 area. He noted that the extension could eventually establish a direct connection to Soekarno-Hatta International Airport.
The proposal was shared during the inauguration of the Tian Fu Gong temple area in PIK, North Jakarta, on Sunday, May 17, 2026. According to the Governor, extending the LRT line from Velodrome (in East Jakarta) to PIK 2 is being considered as part of ongoing efforts to optimize Jakarta's integrated mass transit system.
"I just had a quiet word with the CEO of Agung Sedayu Group. Perhaps it is time to open an LRT line stretching from Velodrome all the way to this location (PIK 2)," he said.
Pramono added that developing this route serves as a strategic step to bolster connectivity between regions, particularly within the rapidly growing area of North Jakarta.
The Governor explained that the alignment for the current LRT Jakarta expansion has already secured permits from the central government up to the Ancol area. Enhancing the transit network in the northern region is deemed crucial for improving inter-district connectivity.
Currently, the LRT Jakarta project focuses on connecting Velodrome to Manggarai. Spanning approximately 12.2 kilometers and featuring 11 stations, the infrastructure project costs around IDR 11.5 trillion (USD 727.8 million) and is targeted for inauguration this coming August.
Looking ahead, future phases of the line are planned to pass through Tanjung Priok, the Jakarta International Stadium (JIS), and on to Ancol. Once these sections are linked, Jakarta’s entire transit network is expected to achieve comprehensive integration.
"If we continue this from Velodrome to North Jakarta, to Tanjung Priok, from Tanjung Priok to JIS, and from JIS to Ancol, then the subsequent segment that still needs preparation is the connection from Ancol to PIK 2, which will ultimately link up with Soekarno-Hatta Airport," outlined Governor Pramono.
At present, Jakarta's mass transit connectivity rate reportedly stands at around 93 percent. The Jakarta Provincial Administration is actively working to bridge the remaining disconnected loop sections to create an even more seamless public transport system.
Governor Pramono expressed hope that extending the LRT to northern Jakarta and PIK 2 would help alleviate traffic congestion while encouraging greater public reliance on mass transit. The project is projected to be a strategic, long-term milestone toward realizing a modern, fully integrated transportation ecosystem across the Greater Jakarta metropolitan area. (Annaila Azzahra/EN)
