RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta – Construction of the extension of the Jakarta MRT North–South Line is continuing as Indonesian Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka visited the project on Tuesday, May 12, 2026. He reviewed the progress of Indonesia’s first rapid transit system while emphasizing that public transportation development is currently one of the government’s priorities.
Gibran directly observed the progress of the underground construction on Phase 2A of the line, including traveling through the tunnel from Harmoni Station to Sawah Besar. He praised the construction progress, which he described as very positive, having reached 59 percent by the end of April.
"This is extraordinary progress. We appreciate all personnel of MRT Jakarta, the construction workers, the central government, and the Jakarta Provincial Government who continue working day and night to ensure the project stays on target," he said, as quoted by the Indonesian Vice Presidential Secretariat on Tuesday.
On that occasion, Gibran requested that the entire construction process proceed according to the established schedule and standards. He stressed that safe, comfortable, modern, and integrated public transportation is a primary necessity for a major city like Jakarta, which is now one of the largest cities in Asia and the world.
"If the system is good, more people will choose to use public transportation," Gibran said.
Gibran emphasized that the development of public transportation requires synergy between the central and regional governments, including support from surrounding metropolitan areas. According to him, such collaboration is important to create a transportation system capable of improving public mobility while also supporting a better urban quality of life.
The first phase of the North–South Line, marked with the letter M and a red circle, connects Bundaran HI Station in the city center with Lebak Bulus Station in the south. That phase was completed in 2019, along with the inauguration of Jakarta MRT operations, and was officially opened by Gibran’s father, former President Joko Widodo.
The second phase extends the line northward, passing through Jakarta’s Old Town and ending in the coastal Ancol area. This phase is divided into two stages, spanning 5.8 kilometers, with seven underground stations.
Construction of the Bundaran HI–Harmoni segment is targeted for completion in 2027 and will pass by the iconic National Monument. Meanwhile, the Harmoni–Kota segment is scheduled for completion in 2029.
