RRI.CO.ID, Jayapura - The landscape of eastern Indonesia’s digital economy reached a significant milestone on Friday, May 8, 2026, with the official inauguration of the Pukpuk Subsea Cable in Jayapura, Papua.

The Papua Provincial Administration has hailed the project as a strategic cornerstone that integrates the region into the broader Pacific digital corridor. It aims to bridge the geographical isolation that has long hindered the eastern archipelago.

During the launch ceremony of Pukpuk Subsea Cable, Acting Governor of Papua, Christian Sohilait, emphasized that the infrastructure serves as the primary engine for regional progress rather than just a simple network expansion.

“Strengthening digital infrastructure is not merely about building a network; it is the backbone for driving the nation’s progress while opening wider access for the people of Papua,” he said, as quoted by Antara.

Christian noted that the cable acts as a tangible solution to connect remote areas that have historically faced significant geographical barriers, providing a lifeline for modern development.

The ripple effects of this enhanced connectivity are expected to touch every sector of Papuan society, from social services to local commerce. Officials believe the robust digital link will stabilize and improve the quality of education and healthcare while fostering a digital-based economic ecosystem.

"Stronger digital connectivity will certainly support improvements in the quality of education, health, public services, and digital-based economic growth in Papua and the Eastern Indonesia region," remarked Christian.

He added that local Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) stand to gain the most through new market opportunities and increased investment.

This initiative aligns with the national Asta Cita government agenda, which prioritizes accelerated digital transformation and equitable development across the country. Beyond domestic goals, the provincial administration views the region as a vital gateway for international relations.

Christian Sohilait pointed out that Papua possesses a strategic position in supporting Indonesia's connectivity with the Asia-Pacific region. Consequently, he argued that digital infrastructure development must remain both inclusive and sustainable to meet global standards.

He concluded by underscoring the long-term vision for the region. “East Indonesia connectivity is the foundation for new growth that connects regions, opens opportunities, and expands economic value," Christian added. ***
