RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Jakarta Province Governor Pramono Anung Wibowo has issued a strategic directive to the Jakarta Provincial Administration to prepare immediate contingency measures to safeguard the capital’s economy against the onset of El Nino and escalating global geopolitical tensions.
Speaking at City Hall on Thursday, April 16, 2026, the Governor emphasized that the convergence of climate patterns and international instability requires a proactive short-term response to maintain the city's impressive growth trajectory.
The urgency follows an official forecast from the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) indicating that the El Nino phenomenon will emerge in mid-April and persist through September. Governor Pramono warned that the climate shift is no longer a distant possibility but an imminent factor that will inevitably impact the Jakarta administration.
As reported by Antara, the Governor noted that the phenomenon threatens to disrupt food security and trigger price volatility across local markets.
The economic outlook is further complicated by external pressures beyond domestic control. Governor Pramono highlighted the ongoing geopolitical conflicts involving the United States, Israel, and Iran as a significant risk factor that could destabilize global energy prices and disrupt vital supply chains.
“The Jakarta Provincial Administration must take short-term steps to overcome that,” he said, underscoring the need for localized resilience in the face of international turmoil.
Despite these looming challenges, the administration remains buoyed by Jakarta’s strong economic fundamentals. In 2025, the city’s economy expanded by 5.21 percent, consistently outperforming the national average.
This resilience is critical, as the National Development Planning (PPN) Ministry has set an ambitious growth target for Jakarta between 6.3 and 7.4 percent by 2027 to help realize the national economic growth goal of 6.3 to 7.5 percent.
Deputy for Economic Affairs and Digital Transformation at the PPN Ministry, Vivi Yulaswati, expressed confidence in Jakarta's role as a global city and the primary engine of the Indonesian economy. The city currently contributes 16.5 percent to the national Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
"We hope the Jakarta Province can push its growth in 2027 to the range of 6.3 to 7.4 percent, accompanied by an increase in the quality of human resources and a reduction in poverty, unemployment, and inequality," she remarked.
Governor Pramono reiterated that while the long-term targets remain a priority, the immediate focus must stay on mitigating the "fast or slow" impact of El Nino to ensure that Jakarta’s vulnerable sectors remain protected during the coming months. ***
