RRI.CO.ID, Pontianak – Reports of behaviors often associated with LGBT groups are said to be appearing in West Kalimantan, not only in major cities but also in rural areas such as Kapuas Hulu. The phenomenon has sparked public discussion, with some cases reportedly shared openly on social media.
Responding to the issue, Chair of Humanity Women Children Indonesia (HWCI), Eka Nurhayati Ishaq, urged communities to uphold moral values in addressing it.
“As a society guided by religious principles, we naturally have our own views on LGBT. But it is important to respond with morality, without hatred or degrading attitudes,” Eka said on Monday, April 13, 2026.
She emphasized the need for wise approaches that avoid hostility toward individuals.
“Approaches rooted in wisdom, good counsel, and prayer are far more noble than insults or enmity. While LGBT visibility is increasing, including in West Kalimantan, we as a society grounded in religion, culture, and social norms do not support or normalize such behavior,” she added.
Eka stressed that HWCI rejects such practices as inconsistent with religious, cultural, and social values, while still upholding humanity. “Every individual must be treated with respect -- without violence, bullying, or degrading discrimination,” she said.
She further reminded that differences in perspective should be addressed through respectful and educational approaches, not hatred or excessive actions. Parents, she noted, play a crucial role in shaping children’s understanding of family and community values from an early age.
“The role of parents is vital in guiding children’s growth, especially in instilling the belief that there are only two genders -- male and female -- as determined by God,” Eka concluded. (Annaila Syafa Azzahra/Sri Wahyuni)
