RRI.CO.ID, Ternate - Mount Dukono in North Halmahera, North Maluku, experienced a significant eruption on Thursday morning, April 9, 2026. According to the Mount Dukono Observation Post (PGA), the volcano ejected a column of grey ash reaching a height of 1,100 meters above its peak.

The eruption occurred at approximately 08.05 local time, with ash intensity reported as medium to thick, drifting toward the east. "The eruption was recorded on the seismogram with an amplitude of 34 mm and a duration of 35.82 seconds," said an officer at the PGA post in Mamuya Village, Bambang Sugiono, as quoted by Antara.

While the overall activity of Mount Dukono is beginning to show signs of decline, the frequency of eruptions remains relatively high. On Wednesday, April 8, the post recorded 61 separate eruption events. Currently, the 1,087-meter-high volcano remains at Level II (Waspada/Alert) status.

The authorities have issued strict warnings for residents and visitors to ensure public safety. Because volcanic ash dispersal depends entirely on wind direction and speed, the affected areas can change rapidly.

Authorities have established a strict exclusion zone, prohibiting all activities, climbing, or approaching the Malupang Warirang Crater within a 4-kilometer radius. Due to the ongoing volcanic activity, the government has also issued health precautions urging residents in the surrounding areas to have masks ready and available.

By wearing masks, citizens can better avoid respiratory issues caused by the falling ash that periodically blankets the region. These measures are essential for ensuring public safety as the wind continues to carry volcanic debris toward nearby settlements.

Mount Dukono's periodic eruptions serve as a constant reminder for the community in Galela District to remain vigilant and prepared for fluctuating volcanic conditions.

Current observations show that while the volcano's overall activity is decreasing, the frequency of eruptions has actually seen a slight increase. This is highlighted by the fact that 61 eruptions were recorded just a day prior, keeping the volcano at a Level II alert status.

Due to these ongoing eruptions, tourists and the local community are strictly prohibited from entering the 4-kilometer exclusion zone around the Malupang Warirang Crater. Additionally, everyone in the vicinity is advised to wear masks to protect their respiratory systems from the periodic volcanic ash fall. ***
