RRI.CO.ID, Kota Bandung - The selection of a new operator for the Bandung Zoo must be conducted with unwavering transparency and professional rigor to ensure the facility's future viability. A Commission IV Lawmaker of the West Java Regional Representatives Council (DPRD), Tedy Rusmawan, issued this call as the city prepares for a leadership transition at the historic zoological park.
As reported by Antara, he emphasized that the selection committee must consist of individuals with proven expertise in wildlife management to ensure the chosen operator possesses the necessary competence.
"The hope is that the selection team is credible, filled with people who have the ability related to animal management," said Tedy in Bandung on Monday, April 6, 2026.
Beyond administrative qualifications, Tedy urged the new management to prioritize the welfare of long-standing employees who have dedicated years to the park. He argued that these workers hold invaluable experience that is essential for the zoo's daily operations.
"Do not let those who have served be unable to return to work," he said, noting that zoo management requires specialized skills that cannot be handled haphazardly.
He insisted that whoever is eventually appointed must be a "truly professional" entity. The lawmaker also addressed recent tragedies at the park, expressing deep concern over the deaths of two Bengal tiger cubs, Huru and Hara. He described the loss as a significant blow to the zoo’s conservation efforts and called for a higher standard of accountability.
According to Tedy, the West Java Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA) and the Bandung City Administration must provide a public guarantee regarding the safety of the animals. Furthermore, both parties are obligated to ensure the welfare of the wildlife in the future.
"Because this has already become a matter of public concern, efforts must be made going forward so that incidents like this do not happen again," concluded Tedy, highlighting the need for systemic changes to protect the zoo's remaining inhabitants. ***
