RRI.CO.ID, Jepara - Robusta coffee from Tempur Village in Jepara Regency, Central Java, is being proposed for Geographical Indication (GI) status, an official recognition that confirms the uniqueness of a product based on its region of origin.
The substantive examination process is facilitated by the Jepara Regency Administration through the Regional Development Planning Agency (Bappeda), with support from the Directorate General of Intellectual Property (DJKI) and the Central Java Regional Office of the Ministry of Law.
“This activity demonstrates the commitment of the Central Java Ministry of Law Regional Office to support legal protection for superior regional products, particularly Tempur Coffee, which is known for its reputation, characteristics, and distinctive quality originating from the Tempur area in Keling Subdistrict, Jepara Regency,” said Tjasdirin, Head of the Legal Services Division of the Regional Office, as quoted from the official Jepara Administration website.
Tempur Village, located in Keling Subdistrict, is a major coffee-producing region. With its extraordinary natural beauty, the village’s potential extends beyond agriculture and offers significant opportunities for eco-tourism development.
“In early 2026, Jepara’s signature Troso weaving received a Geographical Indication certificate. I believe Tempur Coffee can achieve the same. With the support of the Jepara Regency Administration, the community, and all involved parties, I am confident that Tempur Coffee deserves Geographical Indication recognition,” Tjasdirin said.
Coffee is the backbone of the local economy, with most Tempur residents depending on it for their livelihoods. Keling Subdistrict Head Lulut Andi Ariyanto noted that the majority of Tempur’s land is devoted to coffee plantations.
Across Keling, coffee plantations cover 1,356.88 hectares, with 687.60 hectares in Tempur Village dedicated to robusta coffee. Annual processing yields 514,379 kilograms, supported by more than 1,400 farming families in Tempur and over 4,000 families across Keling.
“We and the Geographical Indication Protection Society (MPIG) prioritize maintaining the quality of Tempur Coffee,” Lulut said.
He explained that Tempur’s robusta coffee grows in a basin on the slopes of Mount Muria. Its strong flavor, distinctive aroma, and thick body are the result of fertile soil, favorable climate, and farming skills passed down through generations.
“By being proposed for GI recognition, this coffee will gain legal protection and added economic value. Its competitiveness in both national and global markets is projected to increase rapidly,” Lulut said. ***
