RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia is turning to technology-driven solutions to confront one of its most pressing urban challenges: waste management. Environment Minister Hanif Faisol Nurofiq has highlighted the Semarang Raya Waste-to-Energy Plant (PSEL) as a strategic project to reduce large-scale waste while generating electricity for the region.
“PSEL offers a strategic solution by converting waste into electricity," Minister Hanif said in a written statement from Jakarta on Sunday, March 29, 2026, as quoted by Antara, adding that during the construction phase, the governor would lead efforts to reduce waste through available and upcoming technologies.
His remarks followed the signing of a memorandum of understanding and cooperation agreement in Semarang on Saturday, March 28, involving Central Java Governor, Kendal Regent, and Semarang Mayor.
The project adopts a regional agglomeration concept, integrating waste management across Semarang City and Kendal Regency with environmentally friendly technology. It will be jointly managed by the central government, local administrations, and private partners to ensure sustainable operations.
Semarang Raya currently produces around 1,627 tons of waste per day, with the PSEL expected to process about 1,100 tons daily. This capacity would allow nearly all of Semarang’s waste to be managed effectively while significantly improving Kendal’s waste handling.
Central Java Governor Ahmad Luthfi underscored the province’s commitment to the initiative. “By 2029, we aim for zero waste. We are committed to reducing and managing waste properly to truly achieve that target,” he said.
Semarang Mayor Agustina Wilujeng Pramestuti and Kendal Regent Dyah Kartika Permanasari also pledged support, promising coordinated waste management and widespread public education on waste separation during the plant’s construction phase. ***
