RRI.CO.ID, Surabaya - The Consulate General of the People's Republic of China (PRC) in Surabaya distributed Ramadan aid packages to several prominent Islamic organizations across East Java on Friday, March 13, 2026.
Chinese Consul General Ye Su visited the East Java Regional Office of Nahdlatul Ulama (PWNU) in Surabaya to personally hand over the aid, which consists of food packages and daily basic necessities intended for underprivileged families during the holy month.
During the visit, Consul General Ye Su emphasized that his presence represents the government and people of China in conveying Ramadan greetings to Indonesian Muslims while strengthening the fraternal bonds between the Muslim communities of both nations.
“We know that Ramadan is one of the most important holidays for Muslims. We pray that everyone gains happiness, good fortune, and peace,” said Ye Su, as quoted by Antara.
He also shared historical context regarding Islam in China, noting that the religion has been present in the country for over 1,300 years. Today, China is home to approximately 20 million Muslims, including the Uyghur community in Xinjiang.
The aid distribution is part of a broader diplomatic outreach program, with the Chinese Consulate General scheduling visits to several other major religious organizations across East Java. These visits include meetings with GP Ansor, the youth wing of Nahdlatul Ulama, as well as the Muhammadiyah Regional Leadership of East Java.
Additionally, the diplomatic mission will engage with Muslimat Nahdlatul Ulama and the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) of East Java to further strengthen inter-community ties.
KH Abdul Hakim Mahfudz, popularly known as Kiai Kikin, the Chairman of PWNU East Java, welcomed the initiative, highlighting its direct benefit to the community as the Eid al-Fitr holiday approaches.
“This activity is very good. This is a form of sympathy from the Chinese government, especially since the distribution of basic food packages is much needed by the community, especially those who are less fortunate, ahead of Eid,” Kiai Kikin remarked.
He further noted that the relationship between Nahdlatul Ulama and the Chinese Consulate has remained strong through consistent communication. In previous years, several NU representatives were invited to visit China to observe social developments and interact directly with local Muslim communities.
“Communication continues to flow, and hopefully, this relationship will continue to grow and bring benefits to both parties in the future,” he added. ***
