RRI.CO.ID, Banyuwangi - Construction of a large-scale Waste Management Site for Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle (TPS3R) in Karetan Village, Purwoharjo Subdistrict, Banyuwangi Regency, East Java, has reached 40.95 percent completion.

The facility, part of the Banyuwangi Regency’s Banyuwangi Hijau (Green Banyuwangi) program, is being developed in collaboration with Borealis, an Austrian corporation, under the Project STOP framework, an international waste management initiative co-founded by Borealis and Systemiq in 2017. Operations are targeted to begin in September 2026.

Occupying 4.8 hectares, the TPS3R Karetan is designed to process up to 160 tons of waste per day. Once operational, it will serve 38 villages across six subdistricts: Bangorejo, Cluring, Pesanggaran, Purwoharjo, Siliragung, and Tegaldlimo.

The facility’s daily capacity is equivalent to handling the waste output of approximately 362,000 residents, or about 100,000 households.

Banyuwangi Regent Ipuk Fiestiandani said the facility is intended to control waste, particularly plastic, by sorting and processing it. “The construction of this facility is an effort to control waste, especially plastic, by sorting and then processing it,” she explained on Tuesday, March 10, 2026, as quoted by Antara.

Ipuk added that the TPS3R is expected to provide economic benefits for surrounding communities. “The presence of this TPS can be a solution to waste problems, while also being a stimulus to move the economy of residents around the location. Having a large capacity means that this TPS can absorb many workers so that residents can also get benefits,” she said.

The facility will be equipped with specialized systems to streamline the segregation of recyclable materials, organic waste, and residuals. Recyclables and organics will be processed on-site, while residual waste will be managed further through external treatment channels, ensuring a comprehensive waste-to-value cycle. ***
