RRI.CO.ID, Semarang - The Central Java Provincial Administration is significantly ramping up its annual free homecoming program. To support this initiative, they are deploying hundreds of buses and multiple train routes to accommodate thousands of residents returning for the Eid al-Fitr festivities.
By providing organized transport, the administration aims to curb the use of private motorcycles. This move is intended to decrease highway congestion and lower the risk of traffic accidents during the mass migration.
Central Java Governor, Ahmad Luthfi, announced the details of the initiative in Semarang on Tuesday, March 10, 2026. The program, designed specifically for workers in the informal sector, will facilitate travel from major urban hubs including Jakarta and Bandung starting March 16.
As reported by Antara, the Governor has also called upon local regents and mayors to personally welcome these returning residents, whom he described as "ambassadors" of the province.
"I asked the regents and mayors to go there and greet the people who are going back to their hometowns. They are our ambassadors in the diaspora and most of them are informal workers," remarked Governor Luthfi, emphasizing a community-centered approach to the service.
The logistics of the operation are extensive, involving 323 buses departing from Beautiful Indonesia Miniature Park (TMII) Jakarta and another 23 buses from Bandung.
In addition to road transport, the province has secured 17 train sets for a March 17 departure. These rail services include the Jaka Tingkir Train and additional carriages bound for Solo Balapan, as well as the Tawang Jaya Train headed toward Semarang Poncol.
Beyond the initial journey home, the provincial administration has also coordinated a "return flow" service scheduled for late March. This phase includes four train sets departing from Semarang Tawang on March 27, followed by 71 buses on March 28 across several terminals in Boyolali, Semarang, and Banyumas.
Governor Luthfi reiterated the spirit of the program. "We provide the best service for our people. This is a form of our dedication."
To ensure maximum efficiency, Central Java Transportation Agency Head, Arief Djatmiko, noted that his team is working to synchronize data with the Transportation Ministry and private sector partners. This integration is vital to prevent double-registrations, ensuring that every seat provided is filled and no resources go to waste in the effort to move people safely across the province. ***
