RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Jakarta is accelerating its move toward self-sufficient waste management as the Rorotan Refuse-Derived Fuel (RDF) facility in North Jakarta begins its commissioning phase. This strategic infrastructure project is designed to intercept the massive flow of refuse traditionally sent to the overburdened Bantargebang Integrated Waste Treatment Site (TPST) in Bekasi, West Java.

Speaking at City Hall on Monday, March 9, 2026, Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung expressed optimism regarding the facility's near-term operational status.

"At Rorotan, we are currently conducting commissioning. Hopefully, it will be completed soon so that Rorotan can operate normally," said the Governor, as quoted by Antara.

The facility is currently targeted to process 1,000 tons of waste per day. While Governor Pramono acknowledged that this initial output has not yet hit the original maximum design targets, he emphasized that a 1,000-ton capacity represents a vital breakthrough for the capital’s sanitation crisis.

Jakarta currently generates a staggering 7,400 to 8,000 tons of waste daily, all of which has historically been funneled to the nearly-exhausted Bantargebang site. The Governor calculated that the Rorotan facility could effectively slash waste shipments to Bekasi by over 15%.

"So, 1,000 tons per day is already very good for current operations in Rorotan, and it will reduce waste significantly, perhaps by around 1,000 to 1,500 tons," explained Governor Pramono.

The Rorotan plant is a cornerstone of the provincial administration’s broader campaign to decouple Jakarta from its reliance on external landfills. By prioritizing in-city processing and enforcing stricter waste sorting at the source, the administration aims to modernize the city's environmental footprint.

As Bantargebang reaches its critical limit, the successful transition of the Rorotan facility from testing to full-scale operation is now a top priority for the Jakarta Provincial Administration. ***
