RRI.CO.ID, Kolaka - Local residents and passersby gathered at Totobo Beach in Pomalaa Subdistrict, Kolaka Regency, Southeast Sulawesi, following the discovery of a massive marine mammal carcass on Tuesday, March 3, 2026. The whale, estimated to be approximately 10 meters in length, was found washed ashore in a lifeless state, sparking immediate concern among the coastal community.

The discovery was officially reported by a community police officer from the Pomalaa Police, Aipda Ronald, who noted that sightings began as early as dawn. He added that the report was formalized around 8 a.m. local time.

"Information came from residents in Totobo Village. Some had actually seen the whale carcass stranded since the early hours of the morning," remarked Aipda Ronald.

Preliminary observations revealed several visible wounds on the animal’s body, though the exact cause of death remains a mystery.

The sheer scale of the mammal has presented a significant logistical challenge for local officials. Head of Totobo Village, Nirwani, explained that as of 9 a.m. local time, the carcass remained on the shoreline while the administration coordinated an evacuation strategy.

"We are still trying to find the right way to evacuate it because of its massive weight," said Nirwani, as quoted by Antara.

He noted that the size of the whale is the primary obstacle to moving it from the beach.

As the site became a temporary point of interest for curious onlookers, law enforcement issued a stern public health warning. Police have urged the public to maintain a safe distance and refrain from touching the remains to avoid potential health risks associated with decomposing marine life.

This precautionary measure remains in effect while the village awaits specialized intervention from the Coastal and Marine Resources Management Base (BPSPL) and other relevant environmental authorities. ***
