RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Persistent heavy rains and tidal flooding continue to complicate recovery efforts in Demak Regency, Central Java, where two river levees remain under repair following recent floods. The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) said on Sunday, March 1, 2026, that elevated water discharge has slowed the pace of restoration, underscoring the difficulties of flood management in vulnerable lowland areas.

Head of BNPB’s Disaster Data, Information, and Communication Center, Abdul Muhari, confirmed that the levees along the Cabean and Tuntang rivers were severely damaged by flooding and are still undergoing reinforcement. Repairs on the Cabean levee have reached about 70 percent on the left side and 80 percent on the right, while work on the Tuntang levee remains partially stalled due to high water levels.

“Follow-up measures include strengthening the levees, normalizing secondary channels, installing trash barriers at Sipon Gajah, and clearing waterways with heavy equipment. All activities are coordinated through the Flood Emergency Command Post to accelerate recovery in affected areas,” Abdul Muhari explained.

Despite progress, several parts of Demak remain inundated. BNPB data shows five villages in Sayung District are still submerged under 10–50 centimeters of water, with flooding persisting since February 16 after prolonged heavy rainfall.

He noted that the region’s basin-like geography, combined with tidal surges, has prevented water from flowing optimally into the Dombo River, leaving residential areas and access roads under water. He urged residents to remain vigilant, follow local administration instructions, and report disaster incidents through official channels to ensure swift response. ***
