RRI.CO.ID, Jayapura - The Jayapura City Administration in Papua Province has officially tightened the reins on the sale of alcoholic beverages and the operation of entertainment venues to ensure communal harmony throughout the upcoming Holy Month of Ramadan 1447 Hijri year.
This strategic move, formalized through Mayoral Instruction No. 1/2026, aims to create a respectful and conducive environment for the Muslim community as they prepare for the fasting month. The regulation specifically targets operational hours, effectively halting midday sales and activities that could disrupt the solemnity of the religious period.
Deputy Mayor of Jayapura, Rustan Saru, in Jayapura on Friday, February 27, 2026, emphasized that the directive serves as a cornerstone for maintaining public order. "The city administration has issued a formal instruction strictly regulating the operational hours of entertainment venues and alcohol retailers. This measure ensures they are prohibited from operating or selling alcohol during daylight hours."
As reported by Antara, licensed alcohol retailers are permitted to open only between 8 p.m. and 10 p.m. local time under the new rules. The restriction extends to the city's nightlife sector, including karaoke lounges and massage parlors, which are now confined to the same two-hour window from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. local time.
Rustan urged all business owners and patrons to strictly adhere to these localized timeframes to avoid legal repercussions. "We demand that all business actors and visitors comply with the operational hours established by the regional government," he added.
Providing security reinforcement for the policy, Jayapura City Police Chief, Fredrickus Maclarimboen, confirmed that law enforcement is fully aligned with the administration's goals. The police department is set to monitor the implementation of the decree to guarantee a secure and stable atmosphere across the city.
He underscored the collaborative effort between civil and police authorities to uphold the sanctity of the month. "We hope that with these restrictions on alcohol sales, the Muslim community can carry out their worship safely and smoothly," said Fredrickus. ***
