RRI.CO.ID, Jayapura - Papua’s fisheries sector is making significant waves in the global market. This follows confirmation from the Indonesian Quarantine Agency (Barantin) that the latest frozen tuna shipment to the United States (US) has cleared all international food safety benchmarks.

This endorsement comes on the heels of a successful 17.8-ton export of frozen tuna meat on Tuesday, February 24, 2026, marking a robust start to the year for the region’s maritime industry.

"All commodities have been declared healthy and meet international food safety standards after undergoing rigorous physical inspections by quarantine officers at the Jayapura Seaport," remarked Acting Head of Papua Quarantine, Krisna Dwiharniati, during a briefing in Jayapura on Thursday, February 26, 2026.

The technical precision of these inspections ensures that Papua's marine products remain competitive in high-demand markets like the US, where safety regulations are notoriously stringent.

The economic trajectory for Papua's tuna exports appears increasingly bullish. In 2025, the region successfully exported 20 tons of similar products, valued at approximately IDR 2 billion (USD 119,390). Remarkably, the first two months of 2026 alone have already generated IDR 1.9 billion (USD 113,399) in export value.

"The export value at the beginning of 2026 has already reached 1.9 billion and will continue to increase until the end of the year," added Krisna, as quoted by Antara.

Central to this logistical success is a digital transformation led by the Single Submission Quarantine Customs (SSM QC) system. This integrated platform has streamlined the bureaucratic hurdles that previously slowed down international trade.

"The export application process is now much faster and more efficient. This one-stop system integrates quarantine and customs services, making it easier for business actors to submit applications," explained Krisna.

The local administration has been quick to celebrate these milestones as a victory for the regional economy. Papua Deputy Governor, Aryoko Rumaropen, expressed deep appreciation for the consistency shown by Jayapura’s fishing industry, viewing these exports as global validation of Papua’s maritime potential.

"We hope that more entrepreneurs will be able to become economic drivers and have a direct impact on the welfare of local fishermen," concluded Aryoko. ***
