RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The concrete walls of the Class II A Palembang Women’s Prison in South Sumatra have transformed into a sanctuary of reflection as inmates embrace the holy month of Ramadan through an intensive Quranic literacy program.
Shifting the focus from confinement to personal growth, the facility is utilizing the fasting month as a strategic window to deepen the faith of its residents. This initiative goes beyond routine worship, offering a structured path for women to master Quranic recitation while navigating their rehabilitation journey.
Head of the Palembang Women’s Prison, Desi Andriyani, emphasized on Wednesday, February 25, 2026, that this year’s Ramadan serves as a critical juncture for reinforcing the mental and spiritual fortitude of the inmates.
The prison’s Al-Ikhlas Prayer Room has become the heart of this transformation, hosting daily collective Quranic reading sessions. These spiritual activities are complemented by nightly Tarawih prayers, conducted under strict security protocols that nevertheless prioritize a peaceful and solemn atmosphere for the worshippers.
To further enrich the inmates' knowledge, the prison has launched a "Short Islamic Course" in collaboration with local religious educators, focusing on the depths of Islamic jurisprudence (Fiqh) and ethics (Akhlak). This holistic approach aims to provide a comprehensive foundation for life after release.
"We want to provide the widest possible space for them to worship. Here, iron bars are not an obstacle to drawing closer to the Creator," said Desi, as reported by Antara.
Beyond the spiritual benefits, the administration noted that these religious programs play a vital role in maintaining the facility's stability. By keeping the inmates engaged in meaningful activities, the prison has observed a noticeable decline in stress and anxiety levels among the population.
The impact of this program is deeply felt by the inmates themselves, including an individual identified as DA, who shared that the collective Quranic reading sessions have brought her a newfound sense of tranquility. For many like her, the prison environment has unexpectedly provided the time and resources to start over.
"Ramadan here feels different. We feel we are being given a second chance to improve ourselves and learn to recite the Quran from scratch," said DA. ***
