RRI.CO.ID, Surabaya – The Swedish government is signaling a major expansion of its economic and academic influence in East Java, as Ambassador Daniel Blockert met with Governor Khofifah Indar Parawansa to solidify a multi-sector partnership.

As reported by Antara, the two nations already share a 30-year history in shipbuilding in Banyuwangi. However, this new chapter prioritizes the modernization of Surabaya’s public transit and the globalization of the province’s elite educational institutions.

“This synergy is expected to not only strengthen diplomatic relations but also provide a real impact on community welfare and development progress in East Java,” remarked Governor Khofifah in Surabaya on Friday, February 13, 2026.

A primary pillar of the discussion centered on the Surabaya Regional Railway Line (SRRL). This critical infrastructure project is designed to overhaul urban mobility in the provincial capital.

Governor Khofifah identified Sweden’s advanced transit ecosystem as a "strategic partner" for East Java. This partnership is expected to provide sophisticated operational management, integrated ticketing systems, and sustainable urban solutions.

Ambassador Blockert confirmed Sweden’s readiness to deploy its industrial giants, such as Scania and Volvo, to support East Java’s public transportation priorities. Both companies already maintain a long-standing presence in the Indonesian market.

The collaboration extends significantly into the academic realm, with a specific focus on specialized medical training and high-achieving secondary students.

Swedish delegates are scheduled to visit Universitas Airlangga (Unair) and the Sepuluh Nopember Institute of Technology (ITS) to formalize scholarship programs.

“The Ambassador will visit Unair and ITS to build educational scholarship cooperation in Sweden, primarily for Medical PhD levels for Unair students,” explained Khofifah.

Beyond higher education, the Governor is seeking Swedish support to bolster English language proficiency for students. This initiative targets East Java’s unique network of six "SMA Taruna" boarding schools.

She noted that these institutions house the "best of the best" students from across the entire region. Consequently, they require international support to ensure they remain globally competitive.

Ambassador Blockert expressed optimism regarding the province's rapid industrial growth. He noted that established Swedish brands like IKEA, Electrolux, and H&M are currently scouting for strategic locations that can serve as combined retail hubs and production bases.

“Many things were discussed with the Governor today, including transportation, energy, healthcare, and the manufacturing industry. However, the education and public transport sectors will be our shared priority in the near future,” conclude Blockert. ***
