RRI.CO.ID, Nusantara - Indonesia is developing its new capital city, Nusantara, with a defined objective: the city should develop together with nature. A central element of this vision is restoring forest ecosystems using native trees from Kalimantan, the island where Nusantara is located.

The Miniature Tropical Rainforest (MHHT) area within the capital zone was previously an industrial eucalyptus plantation. Instead of clearing the land, the Nusantara Capital Authority adopted a more ecological approach.

Existing eucalyptus trees are left to grow naturally until the end of their life cycle, while native Kalimantan plant species are planted beneath them to rebuild a diverse, balanced forest ecosystem. This approach helps improve soil quality, supports local wildlife, and creates a cooler microclimate around the government district, including the Presidential Palace area. Native vegetation also plays a key role in protecting biodiversity and maintaining long-term environmental balance.

To implement this plan, on Wednesday, 4 February 2026, tree-planting activities were conducted in the MHHT area. The event involved 85 participants, including executives and staff from Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison, in collaboration with the Nusantara Capital Authority. The trees planted were native to Kalimantan and are known for their ecological importance in tropical rainforest environments.

According to Director for Forestry and Water Resource Development at the Nusantara Capital Authority, Onesimus Patiung, forest restoration in the new capital focuses on sustainability rather than rapid development.

“Even though this area is already surrounded by forest, participation from many parties is important. We allow eucalyptus trees to grow naturally while planting native Kalimantan species underneath to enrich the ecosystem,” he said.

Through the initiative titled “Nusantara Grows with Indosat”, the company highlighted that technological progress should go hand in hand with environmental responsibility. Indosat’s Director and Chief Commercial Officer, Bilal Kazmi, highlighted how technology can support a greener city.

“Developing Nusantara is not just about connectivity. It is also about keeping balance with nature. We believe technology should help create a greener, healthier, and more livable city for today’s and future generations,” Kazmi said.

The tree planting activity demonstrates that building a modern capital can go hand in hand with ecological restoration. It also shows how public authorities and the private sector can collaborate to create a sustainable urban environment.
