RRI.CO.ID, Bintan - A land fire scorching approximately four hectares occurred on Jalan Makam Taman Sari, Sukoharjo Hamlet, Bintan Regency, Riau Islands Province, on Sunday, February 1, 2026. The blaze was first reported at 12:12 p.m. Jakarta time, by the Ekang Anculai Village Community Policing Officer (Bhabinkamtibmas), Police Sub-Inspector Second Class (Aiptu) Herwin, and was successfully extinguished by 5:40 p.m. Jakarta time. 

The Head of the Tanjung Uban Fire Department Technical Service Unit, Panyodi, conveyed that the fire is suspected to have originated in thick brushwood. The landowner’s identity remains unknown, and the exact cause of the ignition is currently under investigation by authorities. No casualties were reported, though the environmental loss is estimated at four hectares of land.

"Our team, along with backup units, village officials, the Subdistrict and Sector Police, the Forest and Land Fire Task Force, and local residents, successfully extinguished the flames. Approximately four hectares were affected, and there were no fatalities," confirmed Panyodi on Monday, February 2, 2026.

The response involved a duty squad of six personnel, supported by an additional backup team and various stakeholders to prevent the fire from spreading to residential areas. Furthermore, the team remained on standby with firefighting equipment and vehicles to anticipate any potential flare-ups.

"Beyond the Fire Department, this operation involved the Bintan Subdistrict Police, North Bintan Sector Police, village staff, the Forest and Land Fires Task Force, Bhabinkamtibmas, and the local community," he added.

Panyodi noted that officials will continue to monitor the site post-incident to prevent new hotspots from emerging. He also urged the public to refrain from illegal land clearing or open burning, particularly during the dry season, to prevent similar disasters. (Annaila Azzahra/Bambang MBKA)
