RRI.CO.ID, Kupang - Mount Ili Lewotolok in Lembata, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), has shown increased volcanic activity, characterized by thin-to-medium white crater plumes reaching heights of 50 to 100 meters. Recent observations indicate that these emissions are currently under low pressure.
Monitoring conducted on Wednesday, January 28, 2026, between 12 a.m. and 6 p.m. local time, revealed the mountain was clearly visible despite intermittent fog. Personnel at the observation post recorded 21 eruptions reaching heights of 100 to 200 meters. These eruptions produced white-to-gray plumes accompanied by faint rumbling sounds.
Weather conditions around the volcano ranged from cloudy to overcast with rainfall during the observation period. Winds remained light to moderate, blowing eastward, with ambient temperatures fluctuating between 25°C and 29°C.
Seismic activity recorded during this window included eruptions, gusts, non-harmonic tremors, and one distant tectonic earthquake. As of the latest report, the volcano's activity remains ongoing, and Mount Ili Lewotolok maintains a Level III or Standby status.
Syawaludin, an officer at the Observation Post, has recommended that residents and visitors refrain from all activities within a three-kilometer radius. The public is specifically warned to stay alert for potential lava flows and pyroclastic clouds in the south, southeast, west, and northeast sectors.
"Please use masks and protective gear to prevent respiratory issues and protect your eyes and skin," advised Syawaludin.
He also urged residents to cover clean water storage areas to prevent contamination from volcanic ash. The local administration continues to coordinate closely with the Observation Post and the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) in Bandung.
Authorities have called on the public to remain calm and follow official guidance from local volcano monitoring officials. Updates regarding Mount Ili Lewotolok’s activity will be provided as continuous monitoring progresses. (Annaila Azzahra/Bambang MBKA)
