RRI.CO.ID, Semarang - The Central Java Law Ministry’s Regional Office is accelerating the mapping of potential Geographical Indications (GI) across the province. Among the latest discoveries is the Yacon Root, a unique agricultural product with high economic value indigenous to the Dieng Highlands.

This initiative follows a field assessment by the Intellectual Property Team, who coordinated with local stakeholders on Wednesday, January 28, 2026. The move aims to formalize the intrinsic link between the product's superior quality and the specific environmental characteristics of its origin.

The Yacon root thrives in the Dieng Highlands, where nutrient-rich volcanic soil and a cool climate complement traditional cultivation techniques passed down through generations. This unique tuber is highly distinguished by its natural sweetness and a crisp texture that resembles a refreshing blend of pear, jicama, and apple.

Beyond its distinct taste, the root has gained popularity as a low-calorie superfood rich in Vitamin C and essential antioxidants. These nutritional benefits make it a highly sought-after product for health-conscious consumers and those following specialized dietary programs.

The Yacon Root has now been integrated into the Communal Intellectual Property mapping scheme, intended for sustainable development through cross-sector collaboration.

Heni Susilla Wardoyo, Head of the Central Java Law Ministry’s Regional Office, underscored the government's commitment to strengthening Geographical Indication protections. He emphasized that the Yacon Root is far more than a simple tuber, but also a strategic asset capable of driving regional economic growth.

"This is a strategic regional asset," Heni explained. "It serves as both a mechanism to improve community welfare and a means to preserve our unique local potential." (Annaila Azzahra/Bambang MBKA)
