RRI.CO.ID, Sorong - Sorong Mayor Septinus Lobat emphasized that the development of layer chicken farms is one of the Sorong City Administration’s strategies in to strengthen food security while also boosting the community’s economy

“Today's layer chicken harvest shows that the farming program we're promoting is running well and providing tangible benefits to the community,” said Sorong Mayor, Septinus Lobat, after the egg harvest in Sorong, Southwestern Papua, on Tuesday, January 27, 2026.

As reported by Antara, the mayor noted that three layer chicken farmer groups in Sorong have now reached production stages, achieving around 85 percent capacity. Their output is expected to help meet the community's egg needs.

Septinus added that the Sorong City Administration continues supporting farmers, especially beginners and Indigenous Papuans (OAP). This is achieved through ongoing guidance and synergy with the central government to foster independent layer chicken businesses.

Meanwhile, Sorong City Agriculture Agency Head, Nelwan Hara, reported that the three groups produce about 15 to 20 racks of eggs per day, sold for IDR 60,000 (USD 3.60) to IDR 80,000 (USD 4.80) per rack.

“These three farmer groups are currently at about 85 percent production. The results are promising and directly impact farmers' income growth,” he said.

Nelwan explained that the layer farms are spread across three subdistricts, which are West Sorong, North Sorong, and East Sorong. Two of the groups consist of beginner OAP farmers.

To that end, the Agriculture Agency provides intensive mentoring on coop management, feed provision, and production handling to optimize operations.

Nelwan also expressed his hope for continued central government support, particularly in feed supply and coop development. He emphasized that these resources, along with other facilities, are essential to sustainably boost Sorong's layer chicken capacity.

According to Nelwan, this harvest event should motivate residents to expand farming ventures, strengthening food security and economic welfare in Sorong City. ***
