RRI.CO.ID, Bengkulu — The City of Bengkulu has successfully maintained a downward trend in poverty rates for three consecutive years, reaching a new low of 11.91 percent in 2025. This steady decline highlights the effectiveness of local social protection and empowerment initiatives designed to uplift the region's most vulnerable populations.
Official data reveals a consistent improvement in the city's economic landscape. After recording a poverty rate of 14.71 percent in 2023, the figure dropped to 13.76 percent in 2024, before the most recent dip to 11.91 percent.
While local authorities acknowledge that there is more work to be done, the current trajectory is viewed as a vital foundation for future development.
Acting Head of the Bengkulu City Social Affairs Agency, Abriadi, noted that the 2025 programs have largely aligned with the strategic direction set by the regional leadership. During a press briefing on Tuesday, January 20, 2026, he emphasized that while the targets have not been fully maximized, the visible trend is an encouraging sign of progress.
"In general, the Social Affairs Agency's programs in 2025 have run according to the leadership's policy direction. Although the reduction in the poverty rate has not yet reached the maximum target, the downward trend is already visible, and this is an important asset for future steps," he said, as quoted by Antara.
The local administration attributes this success to the consistent implementation of social protection and empowerment programs that align with the Mayor and Deputy Mayor’s long-term vision.
For 2026, the administration is doubling down on its commitment to public welfare by optimizing the distribution of social assistance, providing dedicated support for vulnerable groups, and strengthening cross-sector synergy between various regional administration agencies.
Currently, the Social Affairs Agency is shifting its focus toward a comprehensive evaluation of its strategies and the enhancement of public service quality. Abriadi explained that the administration is prioritizing data accuracy to ensure that government aid reaches those who need it most, thereby creating a more sustainable impact.
"This year, we are emphasizing the improvement of service quality and continuous evaluation. We want to ensure that every form of assistance is truly on target and capable of driving a more significant reduction in poverty," he added.
By refining the data collection system for impoverished residents and expanding inter-departmental coordination, the Bengkulu City Administration aims to achieve an even sharper decline in poverty figures throughout 2026.
The ultimate goal is to build a more accurate and integrated policy framework that ensures the city's economic growth is felt by all citizens. ***
