KBRN, Jakarta: The Jakarta Provincial Administration has mobilized emergency resources to help patch a critical leak in the sea wall at Muara Baru, Penjaringan, North Jakarta, as the capital braces for peak tidal flooding.

As reported by Antara, the emergency intervention comes as Jakarta prepares for what is expected to be a peak tidal surge. Governor Pramono Anung Wibowo said on Thursday, November 4, 2025, that the surge was forecast to reach its highest point at 9 a.m. Friday, Desember 5, 2025.

“We fully realize that today and tomorrow, with the peak expected tomorrow morning, the tidal flood will certainly be very high. Therefore, the Jakarta Administration is currently assisting in patching the leak that has occurred,” Wibowo stated at City Hall.

The Governor clarified that the breached wall’s maintenance is formally the responsibility of state-owned port operator PT Pelabuhan Indonesia (Pelindo).

However, given the critical importance of flood defenses, all downstream sea walls in Jakarta remain under the supervision of the Provincial Administration. These include barriers in Muara Angke, Pluit Reservoir, Sunda Kelapa, Muara Baru, RE Martadinata, and Marunda Pulau.

The North Jakarta Water Resources Sub-Department has already deployed emergency field operations to address the breach.

The incident drew widespread public attention after a video went viral on social media earlier Thursday, December 4, 2025.

The footage showed seawater inside the Muara Baru wall standing visibly higher than the adjacent land surface, held back only by the concrete barrier, underscoring the severe risk of coastal flooding should the wall fail.

Importance of the Sea Wall

Sea walls are a critical line of defense for Jakarta, a city that sits largely below sea level and faces regular tidal flooding, known locally as rob.

Without these barriers, high tides could inundate densely populated coastal neighborhoods, damage infrastructure, and disrupt economic activity in key port areas.

The Muara Baru wall, in particular, protects one of Jakarta’s busiest fishing and port districts, making its integrity vital not only for local residents but also for the city’s food supply and maritime economy. ***
