KBRN, Makassar: Makassar Mayor Munafri Arifuddin drew the spotlight at the Asia Smart City Conference (ASCC) 2025 when he appeared in a golden batik adorned with the Lontara motif, a powerful symbol of Bugis-Makassar cultural identity.

His presence at the Pacifico Yokohama North building in Japan on Wednesday, November 26, 2025, captivated international guests with the local touch he brought to the global forum.

Munafri spoke during the City Presentation on Urban Challenges and Climate Change, a strategic forum that brought together city leaders from around the world to share solutions for urban planning, waste management, and environmental issues.

Makassar’s Head of Communication and Informatics Agency, Muh Roem, said the mayor’s appearance in Lontara batik offered a distinct cultural flavor and was warmly welcomed by delegates. “This touch of local culture received an extraordinary response. Resounding applause came from international guests who appreciated how Makassar showcased its cultural identity on a global stage,” he remarked.

Roem explained that Munafri, known affectionately as Appi, concluded his presentation by formally introducing the Lontara batik he wore as a symbol of Bugis-Makassar pride.

The simple gesture immediately drew participants' attention. Several international speakers approached him afterward to ask about the meaning, history, and philosophy of the motif, while also requesting photo opportunities.

The moment underscored how cultural diplomacy can effectively convey messages and strengthen a region’s image internationally.

Munafri was accompanied by a delegation that included Muh Roem, Environmental Agency Head Helmy Budiman, Public Works Agency Head Zuhaelsi Zubir, and Cooperation Division Head Andi Zulfitra.

In his presentation, Munafri emphasized Makassar’s commitment to strengthening waste management and environmental governance as a top development priority. “The Makassar City Administration is concentrating on waste management. We deeply care about environmental issues. Today, I explained everything we are doing to address these problems,” he affirmed.

He also presented Makassar’s profile as the largest city in Eastern Indonesia, with a population of 1.47 million, an area of 175 square kilometers, a 35-kilometer coastline, and 12 islands in its buffer zone that require special attention in environmental planning.

Munafri concluded by outlining the city’s 2025–2030 development vision and mission, which emphasize sustainability, environmental cleanliness, and improving residents’ quality of life.
