KBRN, Pangkalpinang: A plan is underway to establish the largest tin research center in Indonesia's Bangka Belitung Islands province, as announced by the Chairperson of the Indonesian Tin Exporters Association (AETI), Harwendro Adityo Dewanto.

Despite Bangka Belitung being the second largest tin producer in the world, Harwendro noted that the region currently lacks a dedicated research facility. He said that the groundbreaking ceremony for the center is expected to take place in 2026, with hopes of accelerating the timeline.

"The location will be at the University of Bangka Belitung (UBB). We will invite all tin smelters, including PT Timah, for the cornerstone laying," Harwendro said on Monday, October 20, 2025.

The establishment of this research center is intended to cultivate local tin experts from Bangka Belitung. Harwendro also emphasized the importance of this initiative.

"With this research center, we want to create tin mining experts, especially from Bangka Belitung people. We cannot be the world's second-largest producer yet lack our own tin research center. Our human resources are certainly capable, and with the opening of this center, they will emerge," he said.

The news follows President Prabowo Subianto's recent statement on his commitment to eliminate illegal mining and smuggling, which is an activity defined as any mining without proper legal permits.

The President delivered this firm resolve during a visit to the PT Tinindo Internusa tin smelter in Pangkalpinang, Bangka Belitung, on Monday, October 6, 2025.

"We are determined to eradicate smuggling, eradicate illegal mining, and eradicate all unlawful acts. We will uphold the law, and we do not care who is involved," asserted the President.

He subsequently instructed the Attorney General's Office, the Indonesian Military (TNI), Customs and Excise, and the Indonesian Maritime Security Agency (Bakamla) to continue their efforts to safeguard state wealth.

"I believe this is a proud investment. I ask that it be continued. The Attorney General, the TNI Commander, Customs, Bakamla—continue your work. Let us save the nation's wealth for our people," he concluded. (Annaila Azzahra/Bambang MBKA)
