KBRN, Pekanbaru: F-16 Fighting Falcons from the Indonesian Air Force (TNI AU) and F-15 Strike Eagles from the United States Air Force (USAF) engaged in close-range aerial combat exercises, or dogfights, as part of the Cope West 2025 joint training held at the Military Training Area of Roesmin Nurjadin Air Force Base in Pekanbaru, Riau.
Following the official opening, pilots from both countries immediately began a series of structured tactical training phases.
The program started with Basic Fighter Maneuvers (BFM), designed to sharpen individual close-range combat techniques. It progressed to Air Combat Maneuvering (ACM), which emphasized teamwork in paired and group aerial engagements.
The exercise continued with Defensive Counter Air (DCA) and Offensive Counter Air (OCA) scenarios.
In these simulations, pilots were divided into two teams. The Blue Force, comprising four Indonesian F-16s, conducted Combat Air Patrol (CAP) missions to defend the airspace.
Meanwhile, the Red Force, made up of two USAF F-15s and two Indonesian F-16s, carried out offensive operations aimed at penetrating air defenses.
Col. Bambang Apriyanto, Director of the Cope West 2025 Exercise for the Indonesian Air Force, emphasized that the training went beyond combat simulation. It also served to enhance cooperation and mutual understanding between the two air forces.
“Cope West 2025 provides pilots with the opportunity to refine their skills, improve interoperability, and deepen their understanding of air combat tactics alongside their USAF counterparts. This reflects the Indonesian Air Force’s commitment to continuously advancing professionalism and readiness for future challenges,” he said on Thursday, September 11, 2025.
A key highlight of the exercise was the contrast between the two primary fighter aircraft.
The Indonesian F-16 Fighting Falcon, known for its agility and maneuverability, was pitted against the USAF’s F-15 Strike Eagle, which boasts superior speed and range.
These differences created a dynamic and challenging combat environment, requiring pilots to apply their most effective strategies in scenarios that closely resemble real-world aerial warfare.
As host of the exercise, Air Marshal Abdul Haris, Commander of Roesmin Nurjadin Air Base, noted the significant benefits for both air forces.
“We are honored to host this international exercise at Roesmin Nurjadin Air Base. Through joint training, pilots not only enhance their technical capabilities but also strengthen friendships, mutual trust, and strategic cooperation between the Indonesian Air Force and its international partners,” he said. ***
