KBRN, Serang: The Indonesian Hotel and Restaurant Association (PHRI) of Serang Regency conducted a cultural visit to a Baduy traditional hamlet in Kanekes Village, Lebak Regency, Banten Province, on Thursday, August 28, 2025.

According to PHRI Serang Chairperson Yurlena Rahman, the visit aimed to deepen understanding of the Baduy indigenous community. “Today’s activity is part of Seba Baduy. We from PHRI Serang Regency, especially those based around the Anyer Cinangka Beach tourist area, want to learn more about the Baduy people,” she said.

The Baduy are an indigenous Sundanese community who are known for their deep commitment to ancestral traditions. They reject modern technology and maintain a lifestyle rooted in harmony with nature. The community is divided into two groups: the Inner Baduy, who strictly preserve ancient customs, and the Outer Baduy, who allow limited interaction with outsiders.

Yurlena added that the visit also serves as a tourism promotion initiative that hotels in Serang can develop. “We’re also promoting Baduy culture to our hotel guests. Our hotels can offer travel packages that include visits to Baduy,” she explained.

She noted that trips to Baduy could become an additional tourism option for visitors in Serang Regency. “So instead of just staying overnight at the hotel, guests can extend their stay by exploring Baduy.”

During the visit, Yurlena said she received a warm welcome from the Baduy community. “My first impression was how incredibly friendly they were,” she said, describing the locals as kind, welcoming, and deeply rooted in family values.

She also reminded tourists to respect local customs when visiting Baduy. “Every region has its own rules. Visitors should follow them. If you’re visiting Baduy, please take part in their rituals and traditions,” she said.

Banten Provincial Tourism Agency Acting Head Linda Rohyati Fatimah said the initiative is part of a broader strategy to promote cultural tourism in the region. “PHRI Serang Regency is planning cultural tours to introduce the indigenous communities of Banten Province, especially those in Kanekes,” she said.

Linda emphasized that the activity reflects a synergy between local administration and tourism businesses in promoting the customs and culture of the Baduy tribe. “In addition to providing cultural information at their hotels, they’ll also engage in educational tourism so guests can enjoy the trip while learning about the culture,” she said.

She stressed that introducing Baduy culture must be done respectfully, not merely as entertainment. “This is a form of promotion, but it must not become a spectacle. Visitors will be taught how to appreciate the customs and traditions, and how to respect the rules that govern the Kanekes community,” Linda said. ***
