KBRN, Ranai: In a strategic move to strengthen Indonesia’s fisheries sector and stimulate economic growth in its outermost regions, the government has announced plans to construct a modern fish market in Natuna Regency, Riau Islands Province. The initiative aims to elevate local livelihoods while promoting a more advanced and sustainable fisheries industry.

Minister of Marine Affairs and Fisheries, Sakti Wahyu Trenggono, revealed the plan during an official visit to Natuna on Tuesday, August 26, 2025. The market will be located in Ranai Kota, Bunguran Timur Subdistrict. The minister, along with his team and local administration officials, has already inspected the proposed site.

The designated area spans 17,653 square meters, comprising 7,629 square meters of land and 10,024 square meters of sea area slated for reclamation. The development will include a range of facilities designed to support both commerce and community needs.

The facilities will include an ice factory and cold storage to maintain fish quality; public restrooms and wastewater treatment systems; docking area and fish market; culinary zone featuring seafood-based dishes; as well as a parking space, landscaped park, power supply, and temporary waste disposal site.

“We’ve agreed to build a modern fish market that serves not only as a trading hub but also offers clean, comfortable culinary facilities without unpleasant odors,” Minister Trenggono stated, as quoted by rri.co.id.

The Ministry also confirmed that construction of the Natuna fish market will commence in the near future. The project is expected to become a flagship model for national fisheries development, with a total investment of IDR 91.2 billion.

Funding for the project comes from a grant provided by the Japanese government through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). This international collaboration is part of a broader effort to support Indonesia’s maritime and fisheries sector, particularly in remote and strategic regions like Natuna.

Minister Trenggono noted that the idea for the market had been in development for some time but gained momentum following his visit and strong support from the Natuna Regent. “With the Regent’s backing, many issues will be resolved quickly,” he said.

The Minister emphasized that the market would serve as more than just a commercial venue but would also symbolize the advancement of Indonesia’s maritime economy. He expressed hopes the Natuna market will serve as a blueprint for similar developments in other island regions across the country.

The market will be managed by the local cooperative, Koperasi Desa Merah Putih, ensuring community involvement and sustainable operations. ***
