KBRN, Pekanbaru: The Serumpun Malay Cultural Week is more than just a celebration, it’s a revival of historical consciousness and cultural pride in the Land of Lancang Kuning, said Riau Governor Abdul Wahid during the opening ceremony on Thursday, August 7, 2025.
Held in conjunction with the 68th anniversary of Riau Province, the event showcased a rich array of historical artifacts from the Siak Sri Indrapura Sultanate, including the royal crown, a symbol of the region’s majestic past.
“This event reminds us that Malay civilization once thrived and flourished on this land,” Governor Wahid stated at the opening, held on Jalan Sultan Syarif Kasim in Pekanbaru.
The Land of Lancang Kuning is a poetic moniker for Riau Province, derived from the traditional Malay boat "Lancang Kuning," which holds deep cultural and historical significance in local folklore.
In Malay culture, yellow (kuning) symbolizes nobility and grandeur, making the phrase a powerful emblem of Riau’s royal heritage and maritime legacy.
Governor Wahid emphasized that Malay culture has profound historical roots that span across regions. He introduced the concept of Riau Rumah Rumpun Melayu, Riau as the home of the Malay family, as a collective identity and a commitment to preserving diversity within the unity of the global Malay community.
“We want the younger generation to understand that they are part of a long history and a great civilization,” he said.
A major draw for visitors was the exhibition of royal heirlooms, including crowns, swords, and ceremonial medals. For the first time in nearly 80 years, the Siak King’s crown, which long housed in the National Museum, was displayed in Riau.
Public enthusiasm was overwhelming, according to Roni Rahmat, head of the Riau Tourism Agency. Thousands of attendees filled the venue, including tourists from neighboring countries such as Malaysia.
“This excitement shows that the public not only enjoys the performances but also seeks to understand their identity through historical heritage,” Rahmat said.
The Serumpun Malay Cultural Week is expected to become an annual tradition and a platform for ongoing cultural education for the broader community. ***
