KBRN, Magelang: Mount Merapi stood majestically, its peak releasing a delicate plume of smoke that drifted away with the wind. Approximately 100 meters away, a breathtaking waterfall cascaded from a height of 40 meters, adding to the serene beauty of the landscape.
The waterfall, set against a majestic mountain backdrop, painted a breathtaking scene. Ibrahim, a young man from Bandung, West Java, marveled at the sight as he gazed at a photo of Kedung Kayang waterfall displayed on the laptop. "Where is this? It's so beautiful!" he exclaimed in admiration.
This beautiful place surrounded by a “green blanket” of large trees is called Kedung Kayang Waterfall. It is in Wonolelo Village, Sawangan Subdistrict, Magelang Regency, Central Java.
The waterfall is located close to Ketep, a renowned tourist destination nestled along the shortcut road that connects Magelang Regency and Boyolali Regency. This scenic route runs through the captivating area between Mount Merapi and Mount Merbabu, adding to its charm.
The best time to visit Kedung Kayang Waterfall is just before sunrise. From a cliff edge opposite the waterfall, visitors can marvel at the breathtaking sight of the sun's golden rays emerging from behind Mount Merapi, one of Indonesia's most active volcanoes.

Kedung Kayang Waterfall lies at the "footstep” of Mount Merapi. Its natural beauty evokes the essence of the 'mooi indie' paintings, crafted by Western artists during the colonial era, inspired by the breathtaking landscape of East Indies (Indonesia), capturing its timeless beauty.
After strolling a few hundred meters from the entrance, visitors will encounter a T-junction. Taking a left turn leads them down a staircase to the perfect spot for admiring the waterfall, framed by the magnificent Mount Merapi in the background.
There are two small platforms, each attached to a large pine tree standing on the edge of the cliff. Standing at the platforms allows visitors to capture stunning photos with the waterfall and Mount Merapi in the background.
A local resident warmly encouraged visitors, saying, "Feel free to take a picture on the platform. It's just IDR 5.000 (USD 0.30)." The offer provided a unique opportunity for visitors to capture unforgettable moments in the scenic location.
He explained that the river stream forming Kedung Kayang Waterfall traces its origins to the slopes of Mount Merbabu. "Even during the dry season, the river maintains its flow," he remarked, highlighting the waterfall's enduring allure.
Alternatively, if visitors choose to turn right, the path will lead them down to the base of the waterfall nestled in a serene valley. Here, the cascading water crashes against the rocks below, produces a thunderous sound and sends millions of tiny beads of water into the air, creating a truly mesmerizing and immersive experience.
When sunlight hits at just the right angle, the tiny water droplets create a radiant rainbow, adding a magical touch to the waterfall's natural beauty. Can anything surpass the charm of witnessing a rainbow gracefully arching over a waterfall?
The water of Kedung Kayang Waterfall flows as Belan River. It is very clean and cold. Splashing around in a shallow river with lots of rocks is a lot of fun.
More than a decade ago, the writer experienced the wonder of this waterfall for the first time. During that visit, an eagle could be seen gliding gracefully across the sky, right above the waterfall. The majestic raptor was scanning the area with keen precision, searching for its next prey.
"Nowadays, eagles no longer grace the skies here," remarked Dito, a ticket attendant at the entrance.

Local residents have shared a myth regarding the origin of the name Kedung Kayang Waterfall, though the tale remains vague and lacks logical grounding.
From a scientific perspective, the waterfall's formation is most likely attributed to natural processes that "cut off" the Belan River, leading to the creation of a valley at the site. Alternatively, the Belan River may have begun flowing through the area after the valley had already formed.
A valley is defined as a low-lying land situated between two elevated landscapes, often shaped by erosion or geological activity.
During holidays, such as Sundays, the waterfall becomes a popular destination, drawing tourists from various regions. Beyond admiring the stunning natural beauty, many visitors take on the challenge of trekking, as the terrain is quite challenging.
“I am from Magelang City, coming with my family from Yogyakarta,” said a mother who was holding a trekking pole.
Many experts say that immersing oneself in nature helps relieve stress and promote overall health. Kedung Kayang Waterfall is a perfect choice for such an experience.
The entry fee is just IDR 5,000, making it an accessible getaway for nature lovers. However, visitors are kindly reminded to avoid littering and contribute to preserving the pristine beauty of the natural environment. Every effort to protect this treasure ensures future generations can enjoy its charm. ***
