KBRN, Jakarta: The Housing and Settlement Areas Ministry will increase the quota of subsidized housing for journalists to 3,000 units. This increase underscores the Indonesian Government's commitment to the welfare of media workers.
“We initially promised 1,000 units, now we are increasing it to 3,000 for journalists. But the condition is to report the truth and not what is unpleasant to hear,” said Housing and Settlement Areas Minister Maruarar Sirait in his statement on Thursday, May 8, 2025, as quoted by rri.co.id.
Minister Maruarar said that this program aligns with the ambitious target set by President Prabowo Subianto's government to construct three million subsidized houses. Furthermore, the program benefits from supportive policies, including the elimination of the Land and Building Acquisition Duty (BPHTB).
Communication and Digital Minister Meutya Hafid said that the policy represents state recognition for media workers, highlighting that 70 percent of Indonesia's 100,000 journalists lack adequate housing.
“Many journalists sacrifice personal interests in order to carry out the noble task of protecting democracy. The facts show that 70 percent of the 100,000 journalists in Indonesia do not have decent homes,” she said. ***
