KBRN, Jakarta: At the beginning of this week, on Monday, April 21, 2025, the price of gold hit a record high in Indonesia's history. After remaining stagnant at IDR 1,965,000 over the weekend, it increased by IDR 15,000 today, reaching IDR 1,980,000 per gram.
This marks the highest price ever recorded for Antam Precious Metal gold in history, rri.co.id reported.
Gold prices have been steadily rising in recent times, in line with the rupiah's exchange rate against the USD, which remains above IDR 16,000 per USD.
People continue to seek out precious metals as an investment, as reflected in real-world observations—queues at Antam Precious Metal counters and state-owned pawn company Pegadaian outlets are consistently crowded.
People are flocking to invest their money in gold, driven by its significant and ongoing price increases.
The National Consumer Protection Agency (BPKN), however, has urged the public earlier to exercise caution when investing in gold and to avoid the euphoria of excessive buying amid soaring prices.
The agency reminded the public that the rise in gold prices creates opportunities for speculators and poses risks to those unfamiliar with speculative investment strategies.
"It is possible that these speculators buy up gold at high prices like now. When the price goes up again, they will sell their gold, which could cause the price of gold to fall," Head of BPKN Communication and Education Commission, Heru Sutadi, said in a recent dialog with RRI Pro 3.
Heru explained that individuals purchasing gold in smaller quantities, unlike speculators, may panic during price drops and sell their gold at a loss. This loss is compounded not only by the price decline but also by administrative fees imposed by gold shops or sellers, leading to a double financial setback.
He urged the public to remain vigilant and assured that BPKN would intensify its efforts to educate the public, helping them avoid potential harm. ***
