Samanhudi: Building Economic Independence through Sarekat Islam

RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta – National movement figure Kiai Haji Samanhudi made an important mark in history by advancing trade and the economy for the Indonesian people. Born in Surakarta in 1868, he successfully boosted the economic independence of local merchants during the colonial era.

This journey began when Samanhudi studied Islam and the batik-craft business in Surabaya. This practical experience opened his eyes to the unfair treatment of native traders by the Dutch colonial authorities.

In response to this injustice, he founded the Sarekat Dagang Islam (Islamic Trade Union) in Solo in 1911. This platform served as the main vehicle to protect and fight for the rights of Indonesian batik entrepreneurs.

The growth of this business movement continued as the organization transformed into the Sarekat Islam (Islamic Union) on September 10, 1912. Samanhudi led this national-movement organization until 1914 to broaden its impact.

Although his health began to decline in 1920, his dedication to the nation never stopped. He continued to offer brilliant ideas and formed resistance groups to defend Indonesia's independence.

His physical and intellectual struggles ended when he passed away in Klaten on December 28, 1956. His body was laid to rest in Banaran Village, Sukoharjo Regency.

For his great service in advancing the economy and the national movement, the government conferred upon him the title of National Hero on November 9, 1961. This official decision was stated in Presidential Decree No. 590 of 1961.
