Anak Krakatau Eruption Subsides, Volcanic Monitoring Continues

RRI.CO.ID, Bandung – After a continuous 25-hour eruption episode, Mount Anak Krakatau in Lampung Province has resumed eruptive activity, characterized by periodic minor eruptions. Although the prolonged eruption episode has ended, volcanic activity at Mount Anak Krakatau continues to be monitored as seismic activity remains high.

Head of the Geological Agency, Lana Saria, explained that the continuous eruption episode at Mount Anak Krakatau, which began on Friday, September 4, 2026, at 11:07 p.m. local time, ended on Sunday, September 6, 2026, at 12:04 a.m. local time. Following this period, eruptive activity has returned to the pattern of minor eruptions that have long characterized Mount Anak Krakatau’s activity.

“After the continuous eruption episode ended, three Strombolian eruptions with black eruption columns were observed. The return of Strombolian eruptions, a hallmark of Mount Anak Krakatau, is tentatively interpreted as the end of this relatively prolonged continuous eruption episode,” Lana Saria stated in Bandung on Monday, September 7, 2026, as quoted from a Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources press release.

Although the period of continuous eruptions has ended, instrumental monitoring during September 6–7, 2026, still recorded high seismic activity. There were three eruption earthquakes, nine blast earthquakes, 93 low-frequency earthquakes, 98 hybrid/multiphase earthquakes, four continuous tremors, and one shallow volcanic earthquake.

These conditions keep the activity level of Mount Anak Krakatau at Level III (Alert). Lana stated that the likelihood of an eruption in the coming periods remains high.

“The primary hazards include the ejection of incandescent rocks and heavy ashfall, as well as the potential for lava flows should continuous eruptions resume,” Lana explained.

The Geological Agency of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, through the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG), continues to monitor active volcanoes in Indonesia, including Mount Anak Krakatau. Special monitoring of Mount Anak Krakatau is carried out through two observation posts, namely the Pasauran Observation Post in Cinangka Subdistrict, Serang Regency, Banten Province, and the Kalianda Observation Post in Hargo Pancuran Village, Rajabasa Subdistrict, South Lampung Regency, Lampung Province.
