RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta – Southeast Asia's first coal mining center stands in this Sawahlunto museum, preserving the rich industrial heritage of West Sumatra. The Lubang Tambang Mbah Soero Site Museum serves as a unique specialized museum highlighting the region's colonial-era coal extraction history.

Divided into two main zones, the museum features an informative exhibition gallery alongside a fully restored historical coal mining shaft. This site bears witness to the grueling labor conditions endured by forced laborers during the Dutch colonial administration.

Classified as a Type B specialized museum, the facility is owned by the Sawahlunto City Government and operated by its local cultural department. The management team ensures proper site preservation, accurate historical documentation, and engaging educational programs for visitors.

The underground tunnel originally opened in 1898 within the Segar Valley under the initial designation of the Soegar mining pit. Over time, popular local folklore associated the site with a respected foreman named Mbah Soero, whose legendary name remains attached to the historic landmark.

Following years of changing local use, the infrastructure was revitalized and officially opened to the general public as a museum in 2008. This restoration initiative successfully transformed the industrial relic into a premier historical preservation and tourism asset.

The core vision of the museum is to serve as an informative, educational, and representative center for coal mining history. Its mission focuses on preserving historical artifacts, elevating tourism standards, and promoting awareness of the region's industrial past.

Today, the museum plays a critical role in educating students, researchers, and international tourists about Southeast Asia's early mining evolution. It stands as a powerful place of reflection honoring the resilience and sacrifices of past laborers.
